Supernova Astronomy

A Researcher position funded by the UK Science Technology and Facilities Council (STFC) is available in the Astronomy group at the University of Southampton.  You will work with Dr Michael Childress and the supernova research group using observational data from the OzDES multi-object spectroscopy programme and the Dark Energy Survey (DES) imaging campaign on the topic of host galaxies of cosmological (Type Ia) supernovae.   

The appointment will be for a fixed duration of 2 years (though we note an application for an additional two years of funding has just been submitted) commencing as soon as possible or by 1 July 2017.  A relocation and benefits package, plus research budget for travel, computing, and other expenses, will be provided.

The Astronomy group is part of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Southampton, which is currently ranked as a top-5 UK Physics department by the Guardian University Guide and provides a stimulating and collegial environment for research collaborations. We are part of the larger Faculty of Physical Sciences and Engineering, which brings together fundamental research with one of the UK's strongest computer science departments, with particularly strong links in data science. We are also part of the STAG (Southampton Theory, Astronomy and Gravity) research institute, which combines researchers across Physics, Astronomy and Mathematics, and SEPNET, a consortium of universities in the South East region of England for advancing and protecting Physics. The Astronomy group has a strong record of research grant funding and has fifteen permanent academic staff, twelve research staff and approximately twenty five PhD students.

You will have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Astronomy/Astrophysics or closely related field and experience of presenting research results at group meetings and conferences. Previous experience in supernovae and/or galaxies (or related fields) would be advantageous.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
