Research Fellow

Engineering Mats & Surface Engineerg Gp

Location:  Highfield Campus
Salary:   £29,301 to £30,175 per annum
Full Time - Fixed Term until 30/09/2019
Closing Date:   Friday 12 May 2017
Interview Date:   Monday 05 June 2017
Reference:  848217BX

About the Role

This is a unique opportunity to take part in the PhotoDyn project (www.photodyn.org) which aims at exploring a new paradigm in high strain rate testing of materials based on ultra-high speed deformation imaging and inverse identification.

The project team currently consists of Professor Fabrice Pierron, three post-doctoral researchers and two PhD students. We are looking for a new researcher to cover the field of polymers and adhesives, both with direct impact and ultrasonic tests.

Main roles and responsibilities

The main role consists in exploring the design of new inertial tests for polymers and adhesives. Explicit dynamics numerical simulations will be undertaken to explore the design space. Synthetic image deformation algorithms will be employed to realistically simulate images and the grid method (http://www.thegridmethod.net/) will be used to calculate displacements, from which strains and accelerations will be derived. The Virtual Fields Method will then be used to identify the material parameters.

The successful applicant will be in charge of the experimental implementation of these new tests, using either our gas gun facility for direct impact, or ultrasonic excitation (see www.photodyn.org).

Qualifications, Experience, Skills Required

The profile for the candidate is:

  • PhD or equivalent professional qualification and experience in mechanical engineering*
  • Demonstrable excellence in spoken and written English language

In addition, the following would be advantageous:

  • Expertise in high strain rate testing of materials.
  • Experience in full-field strain measurements and high speed imaging.
  • Knowledge of polymer mechanical behaviour.

It is anticipated that interview will be held end of May or early June.
