Silver Splitters: Partnership dissolution and re-formation in later life

A fully funded studentship awarded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership (SCDTP) commencing in 2018/19 Academic Year.

Supervisory Team:

Professor Maria Evandrou (Gerontology, Lead Supervisor) (maria.evandrou@soton.ac.uk), Doctor Athina Vlachantoni (Gerontology)

Although the divorce rate in the UK amongst the population of all ages has been falling over the past two decades, the likelihood of experiencing divorce at ages 60 and over has been rising. The project will use two ESRC investments, the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing and Understanding Society, in order to develop partnership history trajectories to explore the potential consequences of partnership dissolution and re-formation for older individuals’ financial circumstances, mental and physical health and social networks.

Skills Required

Essential: Background in a social sciences subject, ideally linked to partnership and/ or ageing over the life course; Knowledge of binary and multinomial logistic regressions regression modelling. Desirable: Knowledge of longitudinal analysis (ideally also sequence analysis); experience in using Understanding Society or other large-scale datasets.

Funding

South Coast DTP Funding provides an annual maintenance grant (tax free) of £14553 (2017/18 RCUK rate), plus payment of all programme fees.  Other funding available for SCDTP funded students can be found on the SCDTP website (www.southcoastdtp.ac.uk).

Funding is provided for 3 years full-time PhD study (pro-rata for part-time students).  Applications for 1+3 funding for students completing a Master's year prior to the commencement of PhD study are also welcome (details available at www.southcoastdtp.ac.uk).
